COME THOU FOUNT!

Psalm 36:9 – Devotional

Psalm 36:9

“For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.”

Robert Robinson who lived from 1735 to 1790, was saved while attending a service conducted by the famous evangelist George Whitefield. Following his conversion he entered the Christian ministry, but like so many, he would lose his fervor for God.

The words of the hymn “Come Thou Fount” were written to express his own need for a closer walk with the Lord. His prayer is that his heart may be re-tuned to be in perfect harmony with the will of God.

In stanza two he speaks of his conversion. The word “Ebenezer” refers to a time and place when he actually received the Lord into his life as personal Savior and Lord. He goes on to remind himself and others that it is necessary to daily remind ourselves what a debt we owe to the Lord for our salvation at His expense.

Come Thou Fount

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount-I’m fixed upon it-mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to Thee;
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above.

ASK WITH THANKS!

Philippians 4:6-7 – Devotional

Philippians 4:6-7

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

I was taught to always say please and thank you. Have I always done that? No! To my shame I have at times fallen short of that aim. Even so, my desire is to strive toward the goal of living a life of thanks and praise.

LISTEN! Rejoicing is not an option, but rather an imperative. We are to be a people who rejoice! That means to get a smile on our face. You might have the joy of Jesus down in your heart, but you had better let your face know about it. That is what others will see.

You know what comes to my mind right now? I see the saints of God across the ages who had the joy and rejoicing in their hearts, even during times of deep distress. They rejoiced even as the flames consumed them, or the lions devoured them, or the soldiers of the enemy slew them with the sword.

Were their prayers heard? I believe they were. I believe they are with all of the departed saints of God right now, experiencing utter joy. “It is joy unspeakable and full of glory, and the half has never yet been told!”

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing!

REJOICE AND PRAISE!

Psalm 97:12 – Devotional

Psalm 97:12

“Let everyone who is godly rejoice in the Lord and praise His holy name!”

I must confess that I have a difficult time being around negative people. You know the type – – those who see only doom and gloom while ignoring the mighty works of God that He so freely displays for us.

This is not to say that we live in ideal conditions. Let’s face it, we live in a sin-sick and fallen world. Across the ages the people of God have been persecuted and tortured for their faith. It is in these most perilous times that His glory is the most evident and precious.

I certainly do not desire to suffer for the Lord, but I have “signed up” to be a member of His blood washed band. If I am called upon to pay the ultimate sacrifice with my life, I know He will be there beside me!

Whatever you are facing this day, take heart dear one. The Lord has not left you alone! The glorious Holy Spirit is right there beside us and will give us the strength to endure to the end with joy and praise!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

HEARERS AND DOERS!

James 1:22 – Devotional

James 1:22

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, thus deceiving yourselves.”

Are you more than just a hearer of the Word of God? As I write this I am prone to wonder about those who are so far removed from a commitment to the Lord that they seldom even read even a small portion each day?

There is no way we can do God’s will if we fail to read what His will is for our life. We are easily deceived when we rely upon what someone else says the Bible says without seeking to discover it for ourselves.

As teens we used to intentionally misquote the Bible to make a point. We would say: “The following is directly from the Bible: ‘Judas went out and hung himself! Go thou and do likewise! Whatsoever you do, do quickly!’”

Of course that was an absurd misuse and abuse of Scripture, but it is sad that some will also flagrantly tailor the Word of God to suit their own purposes. I would rather allow the Word of God change me rather than my changing the inspired WORD OF GOD!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

GIVING GOD OUR BEST!

James 1:12 – Devotional

James 1:12

“Blessed are the ones who endure temptation; for when their actions have been found in favor with God, they will receive the crown of life the Lord has promised to those who love and follow Him.”

In my teen years our family lived a few blocks from a Christian College. It was normal for me to spend much of my free time in and around the campus. The track team would spend several hours each day in preparation for competition with other colleges.

One of the students who was faithful in preparing for each meet seemed to be the most unlikely to succeed. He did not have the special work-out clothes of the others. He wore only his well-worn pants and shirt. I often saw other competitors snicker at the sight of him.

They didn’t know what I knew. He may not have looked like or acted like the more polished athletes, but it was who finished the race and in what order that counted. Quite often Jess was in the lead or near the front.

Remember it is not how we look that matters, but how we finish the race that the Lord has set before us. I want to be one who trusts in the Lord and finishes the race knowing I gave it my best!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

HIDING IN THEE!

Psalm 18:2 – Devotional

Psalm 18:2

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

We are told that the persecution of believers around the world is increasing. Many are tortured for their faith and some killed. It has been estimated that there are over 100,000 deaths each year at the hands of the enemies of the cross.

Ira Sankey was a singer and song writer who ministered alongside evangelist D. L. Moody. He had experienced an extended time of trial and tears in his own personal life. It was during this time of agonizing prayer that the song Hiding In Thee was born. I am so thankful that the Lord heard and answered his prayer. It has ministered to many people across the years.

About twenty years after Sankey wrote his beautiful piece, Sergei Rachmaninoff was experiencing many problems in his life. He had a mental block, could not write, and felt useless. After several years of emptiness he broke out of his doldrums and composed his Second Piano Concerto. It is a joy to feature a blending of both works this week. ENJOY!

Hiding in Thee

O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly;
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine, would I be;
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,
In times when temptation casts o’er me its power,
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.
