A BABY SEAL!

John 1:29 – Devotional

John 1:29

“Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.”

I heard of a missionary who was ministering in Eskimo villages along the Bering Sea. He was sharing the Gospel using this passage from John 1:29. The response from the people was blank and empty.

The next day he spoke with one of the elders and asked him why the people acted so confused about this scripture passage. The elder scratched his head and replied, “We do not understand what the word ‘Lamb’ means. Please explain it to us.”

The next time the people gathered to hear the Word of God, the missionary read John 1:29, but with a difference: “Look, the Baby Seal of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” He knew he had found his answer. He explained to the group that Jesus was as innocent as a baby seal. Jesus never used His divine power, but allowed Himself to die so men, women, boys and girls could have their sins taken away and be prepared for heaven.

That missionary’s creative application of God’s Word reached into a culture of ice and snow to reveal that Jesus died for them. Many of the people repented of their sins and accepted Jesus into their hearts as their Savior. Praise the Lord for His tender mercy!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

AUTHENTIC PEACE!

John 14:25 – Devotional

John 14:25

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; I do not give as the world gives to you. Do not be troubled in heart, nor be afraid.”

There is a peace that is anything but peaceful. I am told that in the midst of some major battles a cease fire may be ordered in which both sides stop hostilities for a certain period of time. It may be temporarily quiet, but it is not TRUE PEACE.

Prior to the outbreak of WWII in 1938, Sir Neville Chamberlain returned from Germany with a peace compact that was signed by Adolph Hitler. He waved the document and proclaimed, “Peace in our time!” We now know how false that peace really was.

Jesus promises His followers peace that is far different from anything the world can offer. It is peace in the midst of the storms of life. It is the peace that God gave to Stephen when he was being stoned to death (Acts 7:54-60). Other martyrs died with that same peace that can only be described as AUTHENTIC PEACE.

Perhaps you feel like you are being tossed to and fro in the storms of life. It is time to anchor your life to the rock of our salvation and allow the Lord to give you His TRUE PEACE – AUTHENTIC PEACE, that will satisfy your soul.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

HEAR HIS VOICE!

John 10:27 – Devotional

John 10:27

“My sheep know My voice, and I know them, and they respond to Me.”

As a boy I used to spend most of my waking hours playing outdoors. That was long before the days of television, computers, and various instruments that intrude on the delight of being in the great outdoors!

There always seemed to be several kids of various ages that played together. Each of us could recognize the voice of our mother when we were called to come inside. Did we respond immediately? Are you kidding?! It was only after repeated calls, and a few threats of a punishment, that we reluctantly obeyed.

I look forward to hearing the voice of my mother once again. But even more so do I eagerly long for the voice of my beloved Savior that I have known for over eighty years. Sadly, I have not always responded to His voice as quickly as I should, but I have known since I accepted Him into my heart that I am His child!

If you have never entered into that eternal relationship with Jesus by being born again, I implore you to simply invite Him to be your Savior. He knows your heart and has died for you to become one of His kids! Do you hear His voice?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

ULTIMATE LOVE!

Luke 10:35 – Devotional

Luke 10:35

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and mind.”

All too often our human, natural tendency, is inclined toward trying to gain something by investing as little time and effort as possible. We enjoy receiving greatest reward with the least expenditure. The gambling industry has flourished by means of this type of thinking.

I recall the old story of the young man who was writing a love letter to his sweetheart. He vowed that he would climb the highest mountain for her. He would swim the widest river for her. He would fight a ferocious tiger for her. He closed his letter to the love of his life by promising he would drop by her house on Saturday – “if it’s not raining.” Ooops! Words and actions must match!

All too often we demonstrate that same trait in our devotion to the Lord. We talk a good talk, but when “the rubber meets the road,” spiritually speaking, we fail to walk the talk. In today’s Scripture the Pharisees were trying to find fault in the teachings of Jesus. In reply to the Pharisees question as to which was the greatest commandment? He gives His reply that we are to love the Lord.

Let me ask you a very personal question (I am asking it of myself as well). Can we truly say we love the Lord our God with ALL our heart, our soul, and our mind? It is time to look into the mirror of God’s Word and see what He sees.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

OUR ULTIMATE FRIEND!

Proverbs 18:24b – Devotional

Proverbs 18:24b

“There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

Yesterday I had the delightful pleasure of sharing lunch with dear friends and family. My son and his wife were there (I see them frequently), but the most rare pleasure was greeting a former military officer, Bruce Horacek and his wife, Karen. I had served with Bruce some 50 years ago. Wow! How can that be true for someone as young as the two of us? Cough! Cough!

As we shared this joyous reunion and felt God’s love around the table, I caught just a glimpse of what it will be like when we are all gathered together around God’s heavenly table.

I know that the hour grows closer and closer each passing day when the trumpet will sound and we will rise to meet the Lord in the air. That will be a glorious day for every born again believer, but a tragedy of tragedies for those who are left behind.

Let us be fervent in living and sharing the good news of Jesus’ saving grace with as many as possible for as long as possible! Time is short, let us be faithful!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

CHARGE IT PLEASE!

Luke 10:35 – Devotional

Luke 10:35

“Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.”

There was a time when neighborhood grocery stores kept a charge box of charge books for regular customers. After checking your items you could ask the checker to please just put it in your book.

I am sure there are communities where it is still a common practice to go into a grocery store, check out at the counter and then just ask the checker to charge it please! While that brings back many fond memories for us now – – it was really tough times back then.

When I was first in the Air Force, Joyce and I often had no money to buy groceries before payday at the end of the month. There was a sweet couple at the church we attended who owned a small grocery store. They saw our need and graciously allowed us to charge groceries until the end of the month.

God has assured us that He has opened an account with our name on it. We only have to choose the blessings He offers. What a sweet assurance we have in knowing that not only do we have a charge book, but that He has marked our huge account – – paid in full!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

TRUST IN THE LORD!

Proverbs 3:5 – Devotional

Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart!”

The longer I live the more I realize I know very little. I feel like the old pastor who slowly walked to the pulpit. As the congregation eagerly awaited the message from this precious saint of God. He simply said: “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

In the past I have discovered that the interruptions in my regular schedule gave me the opportunity to read and meditate more than usual. I’m so appreciative of having a Kindle device so I can read book after book without carrying an entire armload. One book I read was; “Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts.”

More and more I have discovered a new appreciation of the sovereignty of God. It really is not what makes me comfortable or painless. If it is pain, so be it! If it is suffering, so be it! If it is complete healing, so be it! It is so easy to focus all of our attention upon our own will rather than on what God wants for us and through us.

During our hospital stays, God is able to use us to bring a little bit of healing to the nurses and staff who treats us. We all have a ministry for each situation in life and we need to be available for God to use us!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

LEARNING TO WALK!

1 Corinthians 11:1 – Devotional

1 Corinthians 11:1

“Imitate me as I purpose to imitate Christ!”

There is a time for everything in this life. I think all of us can recall days when we were immature and clumsy in just about everything we did. A toddler learning to walk has more falls than steps. Adults cheer those first struggling steps.

In the Christian walk there are many slips, slides and tumbles. The last thing that is needed is a critical attitude that mocks those painful struggles as a new believer learns how to walk with the Lord.

Rather than being critical, we need to be helpful. That means knowing when to lend a hand and when to take our hands off and watch with joy as the new believer walks on their own. It is hard to keep from cheering when they walk on their own.

Walking on our own does not mean we abandon the One who has given us our spiritual life. We need the nearness of Christ and also the steadying hand of those who have just been learning to walk. Learn to walk on your own and then assist others who also are learning to walk!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
