“TEACH-ABILITY”
 Psalm 143:10
Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may your good Spirit lead on level ground.”

I recall being a young grade school boy and suffering through dull and lifeless classes. As I look back over my school years from this vantage point, I see that I might have profited by starting school one year later.  It was not that I was stupid, but my learning capacity was a little delayed.

It was not until 11th grade that I discovered that I was teachable. It was my speech teacher, Miss Helen Wilson, who held the key to open my mind. She did it by being excited by my progress and giving me encouragement. I not only began to get above-average grades in her class, but in all of my classes.

It would be easy to feel resentment toward all my other teachers who only saw me as an underachiever. I have come to understand, however, that they had no idea that there was potential just waiting to have someone discover my teach-ability.

We may never have a Miss Wilson in our life to encourage or motivate us, but we do have the precious Word of God that is even greater. All we need to do is open the Word and become teach-able!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“GOD’S SUPERIOR PLANNING!”
 Proverbs 16:9
A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”

I have had the wonderful experience of building houses a few times in my life. I also have been involved in the construction of church buildings. The one thing that I was always cognizant of in construction were the detailed floor plans. They showed where the critical components were to be located. If the plans were not followed, chaos and confusion would destroy our construction efforts.

Just as we are mandated to follow specific building plans, so are we called to follow God’s plan for our life. God never calls us to live our life in a haphazard manner. That does not mean that we are to live in rigid conformity.

I have counseled a few people who have forgotten who was in control of their life. They have made grandiose plans for their future only to discover that accident or disease had radically changed what that future would look like.

Not all plan changes are bad. God’s plans for our life always are for our good and His glory. We need to give our best effort to prepare for what is ahead for us, but at the same time be alert to God’s Superior Planning.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“HE LIVES!”
Luke 24:2-6
“They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen!”
Alfred Ackley was a Baptist pastor who had two dramatic incidents in his life that led him to write our hymn for this week. He had been conducting an evangelistic service back in 1932 when a young Jewish man threw this question at him; “Why should I worship a dead Jew?”
Then early on Resurrection Sunday morning as he was preparing for the day he listened to the radio. A famous liberal preacher made this statement; “Good morning---it’s Easter! You know folks, it really doesn’t make any difference to me if Christ be risen or not. As far as I am concerned, His body could be dust in some Palestinian tomb. The main truth is His truth goes marching on!”
Alfred screamed out at the radio, “It’s a lie!” His wife was startled and wanted to know why he was so upset. Following the service that morning his wife prompted him to write a hymn and express his thoughts. He wrote this wonderful hymn.
HE LIVES!

I serve a risen Savior, He's in the world today;
I know that He is living whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him, He's always near.
Refrain: He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
In all the world around me I see His loving care,
And tho' my heart grows weary I never will despair;
I know that He is leading thro' all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing will come at last.
Refrain: He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him, the help of all who find,
None other is so loving, so good and kind.
Refrain: He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
Aren’t you glad we serve a risen Savior? Our God is not dead, HE LIVES!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“I WANT PATIENCE – RIGHT NOW!”
 James 5:8
You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

We are living in such an "instant" age that the mere mention of patience flies in the face of our way of life.  We have instant cash machines, instant check-out counters, instant income tax refunds, instant coffee ... tea ... pudding ... mashed potatoes ... (I was going to continue, but the mere mention of instant mashed potatoes made me sick to my stomach).

In the face of all the short-cuts to achieve our end result, we find that we have even less time for the important things in life than ever before. Not only that, the labor-saving devices we use find us so tired and exhausted at the end of the day that we walk and talk like robots.  Our "time-saving" gadgets and gizmos have us running at a break-neck pace to get from appointment to appointment.  What has happened?

The answer lies in the Word of God.  In all of our efforts we have totally failed to develop the proper discipline of patience.  We do not want to wait or slow down for anything.  In the midst of our hectic, fast-paced schedules we are so busy making things happen that we leave no room for that all important "quiet time" of waiting to see what God is going to bring into being. Slow down and wait for God!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions and your patience!

“GOD’S WRECKING YARD!”
Psalm 51:12
“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.”
Wrecking yards are wonderful places. Vehicles that have been in accidents or experienced mechanical failures are brought to the yard just waiting to be parted out. When you need a spare part for your car and do not have the funds to buy a new part, a wrecking yard can be a blessing. God also has a wrecking yard.
A friend from my year of service at St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada, sent me a message that Rev. Bob Harrington had died. Bob Harrington was once known as the Chaplain of Bourbon Street. Back in Newfoundland we spent many hours listening to his messages on reel-to-reel tapes (the latest and greatest in modern technology 50 years ago).
It was heartbreaking to hear the news many years ago that Bob Harrington turned his back on the Lord and went the way of the world. I am sure that Satan danced with glee that this servant of the Lord had fallen from grace. That is until God sent another one of His servants to restore His lost child.
One day a call came from a pastor friend of Bob's urging him to return to the fold of God. Bob answered that call and was used of God -- once again he became effective in winning souls for Christ. Perhaps not as good as new, but try telling that to a soul saved by grace!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“FISH DINNER!”
John 21:9
“Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.”
Have you ever experienced a meal so delectable that years later the memory still makes your mouth water? There was once a restaurant in north Idaho that was mine and Joyce's favorite. Their specialty was baked potatoes. It was heartbreaking to drive by our favorite eatery on a trip north only to discover the building had been destroyed by fire. No more of those wonderful baked potatoes for us.
Today's scripture has often made me wonder what that seashore breakfast must have tasted like to the disciples who had been invited to come and dine. Think about it! The Master who had created the universe had Himself prepared fish and bread. I am sure that they had never wrapped their lips around anything so delicious.
The Master invites each and every one of us to gather around His table and partake of the food He prepares for us. His food nourishes and sustains us to do His will for our lives.
If you are trying to survive on the scraps of this world, I want to invite you to move up to the Lord's table and enjoy the meal He has prepared for His disciples. It will do more than sustain you -- it will equip you for His service.
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“NOT ASHAMED!”
1 John 2:28
“And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.”
We live in a day and age where people seemingly are not ashamed of anything they do. Not only is there a lack of shame, but there seems to be a pride in aberrant behavior. Those of us who live by the Word of God are ridiculed and teased about not going along with the sinful lifestyle around us.
I once heard the story of a small group of believers who were meeting to worship in a country that oppressed the preaching and teaching of the Gospel. In the middle of the meeting the doors suddenly burst open and several masked men came in with drawn weapons. They demanded that anyone who was ready to die for their belief to remain and that all others should leave.
Several panicked people ran from the building, leaving behind a few brave souls who were certain they were about to die for the faith. But to their amazement, after the leader of the masked invaders closed and locked the door, they all removed their hoods and said they were looking for true believers to worship with.
Not only do I want to stand true to the Lord, I want to never be ashamed to proclaim Jesus as the Lord of my life. To live is Christ and to die is gain!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

 “NEAR THE CROSS!”
I Peter 4:12-13
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.”

Fanny J. Crosby was a remarkable woman. There are so many accomplishments in her life that it is hard to comprehend them all. She lost her eyesight because of the treatment of a careless doctor. In spite of her loss she memorized huge portions of Scripture just by listening to her grandmother read them to her. She is credited with writing over 10,000 hymns during her life.

Fanny began writing poetry at an early age, but another amazing fact is that she did not accept Jesus as her personal Savior until she was 31. She was attending a service on November 20, 1850. The congregation was singing a hymn by Isaac Watts; At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light. She knew she needed the Lord and that very night He became her Savior and Lord. Her desire was to always stay close to Jesus who had paid the ultimate price for her salvation. Her desire was to remain near her Lord. She immediately wrote the words to the hymn for this week.

1. Jesus, keep me near the cross;
there a precious fountain,
free to all, a healing stream,
flows from Calvary's mountain

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

2. Near the cross, a trembling soul,
love and mercy found me;
there the bright and morning star
sheds its beams around me
.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.
3. Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
bring its scenes before me;
help me walk from day to day
with its shadow o'er me.

Refrain:
In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.
4. Near the cross I will watch and wait,
hoping, trusting ever,
till I reach the golden strand
just beyond the river.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

“BE CAUTIOUS!”
Jude 1:23
“Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.”
Cautiousness is a character trait that every true believer should practice at all times. It may be defined as knowing the importance of having the right timing in accomplishing the right actions.
Someone has noted that God’s work done in God’s timing will accomplish great and meaningful results. Unfortunately, too many of us think we have a better grasp of when things should be done than God does.
I often think of Joseph and the years he spent alone and forgotten in Egypt. I say forgotten, but that was only in the minds of his family. God had not forgotten him! Joseph was being prepared to save the very brothers who had betrayed him.
As we live our lives for Christ we must demonstrate caution in the way we deal with the circumstances that confront us. It is far too easy to act rashly instead of cautiously. The question we should always ask ourselves is: “What would Jesus do if He were faced with this circumstance?” Then act accordingly!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“PURE DELIGHT!”
1 Chronicles 16:25-26
“Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments.”
There have been times in my life when I have been blessed to be overcome with pure delight. For instance, that day so long ago when I knelt at an altar on the last day of Vacation Bible School and received Jesus as my personal Savior was a life-changing delight.
Then there was the day I first saw my future wife. We were just fourteen, but it was a moment I will never forget -- a moment of pure delight. I somehow “knew” that she was the only girl for me! We grew inseparable for over 65 years.
The birth of our three children, eight grandchildren, and eight (soon to be nine) great-grandchildren have been times of pure delight. As I consider the days of my life, I realize what rich blessings the Lord has showered upon me.
It is often easy to focus on the personal blessings and overlook the greatest delight of all -- the unchanging Word of God. In times of trial and heartache, His word has been my constant delight. I can rejoice with tears in my eyes because the Lord has given me the assurance that He will never leave me! WHAT PURE DELIGHT!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“THE TRUE GOD!”
1 Chronicles 16:25-26
“For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is also to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.”
Some people try to convince us that it really does not matter what you believe as long as you are sincere. That is rubbish! I might be sincere in saying that touching a bare electric wire will not hurt me, but in reality it might even kill me.
The mighty defender of the faith, the Apostle Paul, was at one time the violent persecutor of the faith. Was he sincere? Absolutely! He was convinced that he was doing God’s work by persecuting the believers in Jesus Christ.
The problem with Paul, as well as others, is that they served or are serving gods of their own making, not the God of the universe. Our God is the blessed controller of all things and the One who created everything. He always stands ready to receive each and every person who comes to Him by faith.
Do you serve the true God? Is Jesus Christ the Lord of your life or have you replaced Him with the gods of money, pleasure, pride, sensuality, greed, sloth, indifference, or some other man-made indulgence? Turn to the True God!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
