"LET THERE BE LIGHT"
Genesis 1:3-4
"Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
The vast majority of crimes and sinful activities are committed in the dark. Man has deceived himself into thinking that if others cannot see what he is doing God cannot see what he is doing. Not only is that false it is foolish!
God loves light! From the opening moments of creation God established light. The light God created has existed down through the ages. That light will continue until God establishes a new heaven and a new earth. We are told in the book of Revelation that in heaven there will be no need for the sun or the moon because God will be the light.
Since God is the light of the world he desires for his children to be a light in a dark world. As a boy I can recall singing a song; “This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. I wonder how many kids who sang that song are letting their light shine today.
In what way are you a light in a dark world? Do you bring hope and light to those who are groping about in darkness? If you have a question about this I urge you to pray and go into God’s word and find that light so you can light the way for others.
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

"FALSE COMFORT"
Deuteronomy 30:19
"This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live."

Across the years I have sat across the table from grieving individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one. In a few instances I have had to deliver the news of a death to family members.
Sometimes I have heard statements to the effect a friend had mentioned that God needed another angel, and the deceased person was that angel.  I am always compelled to debunk the false notion that we become angels when we die.

I am always delighted to learn that the deceased person had received Jesus as their personal Savior.  All too often there is no indication that the deceased had ever received Christ as their personal Savior. Sometimes individuals have tried to paint a picture of salvation where there is no basis for that false hope.

In contrast to this false comfort, are those who have made the choice to go God’s way. When believers close their eyes in death they awaken to life everlasting. That is real comfort that is based upon the certainty of God’s word.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN!
I Thessalonians 4:17-18
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.
Though an invalid for much of her life, Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was always active and enjoyed a long personal friendship with Fanny Crosby. These two women met often for fellowship and discussion of their new hymns. Eliza was a school teacher in Philadelphia and a Christian lay worker who was committed to write songs to teach children the basic truths of the gospel. This song was written for her own Sunday school class in Philadelphia.
Miss Hewitt often attended the Methodist camp meetings at Ocean Grove, New Jersey. It was here that she collaborated with Emily Wilson, the wife of a Methodist district superintendent in Philadelphia, in the writing of this triumphant gospel hymn--a favorite of young and old alike. "When We All Get to Heaven" was first published in 1898.
WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN
1.  Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace.
In the mansions bright and blessed He’ll prepare for us a place.

Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

2.  While we walk the pilgrim pathway, Clouds will overspread the sky;
But when traveling days are over, Not a shadow, not a sigh.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
3.  Let us then be true and faithful, Trusting, serving every day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory will the toils of life repay.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
4.  Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we’ll behold;
Soon the pearly gates will open; We shall tread the streets of gold.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

“DECEITFUL PRIDE!”
Jeremiah 17:9-10
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

My daughter made a comment a few days ago that was like a slap in the face. It was in no way disrespectful, but it confronted me with something I was not aware even existed in my life.

She had been to the dentist and while there she commented to the dental hygienist that I never used any type of deadening when I had dental work done. She went on to tell her that I was PROUD of it. WOW!

As I have thought about her statement I have come to realize that I have been taking pride in a silly thing like not using Novocain. Many times we think of only the big areas of pride in our life and overlook the small, but just as deadly sources of pride.

I have prayed and asked the Lord to forgive me for this sin of pride. I am also searching for other hidden things that demonstrate pride. My desire is to search and confess each time I discover some area of pride I have overlooked.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“PATIENCE!”
Psalm 37:7-8
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm.

In school we used to joke about being impatient. I can still recall a classmate saying; “I don’t have any trouble with being patient, it is the waiting that I have trouble with!”

That is where the rub comes isn’t it. Waiting is so hard that we feel we must be doing something wrong and so we barge ahead of God and take action. The problem is that it is our action rather than HIS action. It is almost as if we feel that we have to give God a little boost.

The Psalmist sets us straight in the matter of patience. In today’s Scripture we are told to REST IN THE LORD. That does not mean to work like crazy doing good things in order to impress the Lord. It means relaxing and trust that He will open the door He wants us to walk through when the time is right—not before!

If you are feeling weighed down and impatient waiting for the Lord to act upon your prayer request—STOP! Do not let yourself be burdened by seeing others prosper while you suffer. Rest in the Lord! He will call you when He is ready. That is patience!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“OUR EVERYTHING!”
Romans 11:36
For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

I think it was my spiritual mentor, Dr. John Hall, who first introduced me to a statement that I have kept in my heart for over 50 years now. “I Can’t—He can—That’s all I need to know—Let’s go!”

To live by that spiritual principle gives both purpose and direction. Too often we try to do things our way with our abilities and ultimately find ourselves flat on our face. That is when another expression describes our condition; “Our get up and go, got up and went!”

Anytime I have experienced loss or failure in the fifty years since Dr. John shared this expression with me, I have recognized it is not my strength or knowledge that makes the difference. It is only to the degree that I place everything in God’s hands that I am able to get up and go.

The next time you feel that you are in over your head or lack the ability to serve the Lord, just remember that it is God’s business to work in and through you to perform the things He wills and purposes. HE IS OUR EVERYTHING!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“AT THE CROSS!
Hebrews 12:1-2
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

This week’s hymn was written over 300 years ago by Isaac Watts. It would be impossible to fully know the number of lives it has touched since he wrote it. One of those lives was the blind hymn writer, Fanny J. Crosby. In the autumn of 1850 revival meetings were being held in the Thirtieth Street Methodist Church in New York City.

Fanny and some of her friends attended each night and she craved for spiritual joy, but could not find it. On the evening of November 20, 1850, it seemed to her that the light must indeed come then or never. After a prayer was offered, they began to sing this hymn. When they sang “Here Lord, I give myself away,” her soul was flooded with a celestial light. She realized what her problem had been. She realized that she had been trying to hold the world in one hand and the Lord in the other.
AT THE CROSS
1. Alas! and did my Savior bleed, And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head, For sinners such as I?
Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
2. Was it for crimes that I had done, He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
3. Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died, For man the creature’s sin.

Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
4. But drops of grief can ne’er repay, The debt of love I owe:Here, Lord, I give myself away, ’Tis all that I can do.
Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
Are you like Fanny Crosby—looking for joy to fill your soul? Her answer is our answer— Here, Lord, I give myself away, ’Tis all that I can do.

“HOLINESS!”
2 Corinthians 7:1
Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

A message of holiness is generally not popular in our modern world. I guess most people feel they are pretty good and have no need to hear a call to clean up our act and live holy lives.

In this feel-good society we place the stress on creature pleasures. Over and over I have heard people refuse to commit their life to Christ because they want to enjoy the pleasures of sin. They want to wait until they have fully satisfied their lusts and then they will be interested in getting right with God. BEEP!

Two thoughts always come to mind in response. First is the reality that these so-called pleasures are not all they are cracked up to be. The most miserable people I have ever met are victims of what they once called pleasure. Now their lives have become a living nightmare. Often they are too ashamed to turn to God.

The second observation is that none of us know how long we have to live. These human bodies of ours are absolutely amazing. Our critical organs can function over long periods of time, but just as true, they can experience catastrophic failure at a moment’s notice and we will be in eternity. I WANT TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“RENEWED!”
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

It is fascinating to see an old abused item renewed and made whole once again. I recall a friend years ago who found an old derelict car that was so rusted out it seemed impossible to do anything with it.

I was wrong. Several years later I returned to the area and was invited to assist my friend in loading that old wreck into a truck to transport it to an auto show. I could not believe that he would want to take that hunk of junk anywhere but to the wrecking yard!

Then I saw it. Wow! What a transformation! It looked better than it did when it originally came off the assembly line. IT HAD BEEN RENEWED! My friend's hands had created something beautiful! It was his handiwork.

In the same way, God wants to take the old wrecks of our lives and renew them into things of beauty that will show forth His handiwork.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“GET EVEN!”
Romans 12:19-22
Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. Therefore; ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

This morning as I drove around taking care of errands, I was listening to the radio. The opera, Il Trovatore, was about to start and the commentator was giving a synopsis. I was struck by the violence that the opera portrayed. Vengeance was graphic in which several characters, including infants, were burned to death.

I know this was just an opera based on fictional characters, but the demand for vengeance revealed the wickedness of the human heart. Even in our modern day, perhaps even more so than in times past, there is a loud demand for vengeance.

The bible does speak about getting even. It appears in today's passage of Scripture. In order to get even with someone who has become your adversary, here are the steps to take: Feed him and give him something to drink if he is thirsty.

And here is the result of treating your enemy this way: “ ... you will heap coals of fire on his head.” That is getting even God’s way. Let God fight your battle for you. All you have to do is overcome evil with good!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
