“EXPECTATION!”
Philippians 1:19-21
For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,  according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

When I think of expectation, I often recall certain dear friends of ours. One year the wife was expecting a special bracelet for her birthday. She dropped all the necessary hints to her husband, even going so far as to point out the exact bracelet she expected for her upcoming birthday. When her birthday finally arrived, the wife was stunned! Instead of giving her the bracelet, her husband John had bought her a garden composter. Now that is about as far from a bracelet as you can get!

What is the opposite of expectation? To my mind it would be hopelessness. Just saying that gives me a feeling of despondency. I want to let you in on a little secret. Despondency never generates enthusiasm or hopefulness. It’s just the opposite -- it tears down and destroys those that are looking for someone to give them a reason for their faith.

In this world there will be many disappointments. If our expectation is focused on the things of this world, we will always fail. The things of this world will always tarnish and fade. Only the things of eternal value are worthy of our expectation. As Paul summed it up: “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. That is where our expectation must be!
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“VICTORY IN JESUS!”
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

As a boy I was known to take shortcuts. My mom would tell me to clean up my room, but somehow my efforts always fell short of Mom’s expectations. My ways were not her ways! My "good enough" was not good enough for Mom!

I fear that is the case with many of us, especially when it comes to spiritual matters. God says it,  but we run it through our own individual filter and come up with something that is less than God’s ideal. Does that sound familiar to you?

Today’s Scripture is one of my all-time favorites. In it I see two commands that must be met in order to please God. The first is to trust in the Lord with all our heart. Using our own understanding as a measure will always result in failure. Anything less than all our heart is never pleasing to God.

The second command is to acknowledge God in all our ways. That means our thoughts have to be directed toward Him. We need to acknowledge that God is in control of every aspect of our lives. It is only then that He promises to direct our paths. If you want to find victory in Jesus, live your life by Proverbs 3:5-6.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“UNDER HIS WINGS!”
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

I once read about a forest service worker who was walking through an area that had just been ravaged by a forest fire. He saw a strange mound and stopped to check it out. To his astonishment it was a mother bird that had been killed by the fire. As he knelt to examine the bird, he heard a peep from under the pile of ashes. When he turned the bird over he found several chicks.

Instead of flying to save herself, the mother had sacrificed herself in order to protect her brood from the fire that was sweeping toward them. That is what Jesus has done for us. He wants to shelter us under His wings from the firestorm of life.

In 1896, William Cushing wrote the words and Ira Sankey composed the music to the hymn, Under His Wings. Enjoy this featured hymn from GloryScapes.

Under His Wings
Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.
Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings, who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide, safely abide forever.
Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.
Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings, who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide, safely abide forever.
Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are over;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I am safe evermore.
Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings, who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide, safely abide forever.

“THANK YOU LORD!”
I Chronicles 16:8-9
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples!  Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; talk of all His wondrous works!”

The last Thursday in November is designated Thanksgiving Day (at least here in the United States). Other countries celebrate Thanksgiving Day on different dates. It is a wonderful day of enjoying family, friends, and food … not necessarily in that order!

There are a few thoughts that run through my mind concerning Thanksgiving Day. For one thing, it seems sad that we have just one day in order to express our thanks. What about all the other days of the year? Many people never even take time to bow their heads and thank the Lord before they partake of their regular daily meals.

There are so many other things that we need to thank the Lord for besides providing the food. We can certainly thank Him for the physical things that we have been given, but we need to stop and also thank Him for the spiritual things.

I want to urge you on this Thanksgiving Day to take time to thank God for salvation. Thank Him for loving us even when we are unlovable. Thank Him for the people that He has brought into each of our lives to make our life complete.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“JUST A MINUTE!”
Esther 4:14
For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

As a boy I often employed the phrase “just a minute” when my mom had asked me to do something. Strange as it may seem, I often heard the same phrase repeated by our three children when either Joyce or I had asked them to do something.

One of my favorite television programs is "Texas Country Reporter." I was  watching a recent episode when Bob Phillips and his wife Keli visited the Buffalo Soldiers Museum. It was there that I heard a poem by Dr. Benjamin Mays. Let me share it with you and allow you to let it sink in. I hope it has the same impact on you as it did on me.

God’s Minute
I've only just a minute, Only sixty seconds in it.
Forced upon me, can't refuse it, Didn't seek it, didn't choose it,
But it's up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it,
Give an account if I abuse it, Just a tiny little minute,
But eternity is in it.
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“HEAVENLY!”
I Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’

It is amazing how many times we hear people mention heaven. Some of these people do not even believe in God, but they are heard to make comparative comments about heaven. Have you heard them?

“This apple pie tastes heavenly!” “That music is just heavenly!” “I love that perfume; it smells like heaven!” You get the idea and you no doubt could add a few other similar comments.

We are permitted very few glimpses into the home God has prepared for us in heaven, but it is safe to say that our senses of sight, taste, smell, or sound can never begin to grasp the scope of heaven.

I have determined to live each day of my life as if it were the last day I have on this side of eternity. I know that what God has prepared for us in our heavenly home will be  just ... heavenly!! What more can I say? I can hardly wait to get there!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“CONSUMED!”
Psalm 119:139-140
My zeal has consumed me, because my enemies have forgotten Your words. Your word is very pure;therefore Your servant loves it.

It is that time of year when the temperature drops below 32 degrees F. and it is the time to start using my wood stove. There is something about the heat emanating from that small stove that seems to wrap the entire house in comfort.

Over the years I have often been struck with the way wood is consumed by the fire. In lighting the stove it is necessary to use small kindling and progressively add larger and larger pieces of wood. I will place a heavy log on the coals and marvel at the way it is eaten up … Consumed!

Each time this occurs I am reminded that we have that same choice in our spiritual life. We can either be consumed in serving the Lord or remain in our original state. I like to think of it as either burning up or burning out.

I would rather live my life in such a way that I am consumed in serving God so that I leave nothing but a bit of ashes. The alternative is to burn out and remain a charred and ugly block of wood. We have enough ugly blocks already. What we need to see are more ashes left by people who have burned brightly for the Lord and slipped into eternity having been consumed with the zeal for the Lord.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“HE LIVES!”
Luke 24:2-6
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen!”

Alfred Ackley was a Baptist pastor who had two dramatic incidents in his life that led him to write our hymn for this week. He had been conducting an evangelistic service back in 1932 when a young Jewish man threw this question at him; “Why should I worship a dead Jew?”

Then early on Resurrection Sunday morning as he was preparing for the day he listened to the radio. A famous liberal preacher made this statement; “Good morning---it’s Easter! You know folks, it really doesn’t make any difference to me if Christ be risen or not. As far as I am concerned, His body could be dust in some Palestinian tomb. The main truth is His truth goes marching on!”

Alfred screamed out at the radio, “It’s a lie!” His wife was startled and wanted to know why he was so upset. Following the service that morning his wife prompted him to write a hymn and express his thoughts. He wrote this wonderful hymn.

HE LIVES!

I serve a risen Savior, He's in the world today;
I know that He is living whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him, He's always near.
Refrain: He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me I see His loving care,
And tho' my heart grows weary I never will despair;
I know that He is leading thro' all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing will come at last.

Refrain:
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him, the help of all who find,
None other is so loving, so good and kind.

Refrain: He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
Aren’t you glad we serve a risen Savior? Our God is not dead, HE LIVES!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“ASKING!”
James 4:3
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”

Back in 1970 I was stationed at Whiteman AFB in Missouri. The Ice Capades show was touring across the country and they were going to be in Kansas City. Tickets were made available to military families at a huge discount. We bought the tickets and were anticipating a family adventure. Then came news of riots in the inner city and we did not go.

A few years later the Ice Capades again came to Kansas City. Joyce said she was going to write and ask for tickets since we were afraid to go the last time they were there. I tried to talk her out of it since they were not at fault, but she sent the letter. Shortly we received five tickets! That’s my wife! Our previous tickets were for seats far from the ice rink, so we were looking for our seats and could not find them. We asked an usher and were told that the seats were down front. When I say down front, they were right next to the ice. Our youngest daughter, Lori, was even chosen to ride in one of the featured rides.

If Joyce had not asked we would never have enjoyed that wonderful experience in our life. It was not what we expected, but far more. When we ask of the Lord we are told to never ask selfishly. Ask for His will and watch for His answers!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“PEACE!”
Hebrews 11:37-38
They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.

Have you ever had people return from a trip and comment that God was with them and they had no trouble coming or going? Does that imply that if something had gone wrong that God was not with them? That’s something to think about, isn’t it?

I have had trips where I encountered unexpected difficulties. I didn’t relish those difficult times, but I could see the hand of God working. Pain and turmoil does not necessarily mean that God is not using us.

Job went through tremendous suffering and pain. The loss of all of his children, his wealth, and his health did not mean that God was not using him. Job has become the example for all of us that in the midst of the pain God is at work.

Joseph was another shining example of enduring pain for the sake of the Lord. Cast into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison was God’s way of placing him where he needed to be. When things go rough in our life we do not ever feel like God has forgotten us. Find His peace and live!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“TIMING!”
Proverbs 27:14
He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it will be counted a curse to him.”

I love reading the Bible. It is always alive and active; not only that, there are verses that are very humorous, but true. The Scripture for today is such a verse. Read it once again. What does it say? It is not that we are to refrain from blessing our friend, but there is a time and place.

I have been an early riser most of my life. My habit is to arise anywhere from 4:30 to 5:00 in the morning. It is quiet and without interruption and gives me the opportunity to read, study, and pray. The one thing that I do not like during these early morning hours is an interruption.

Picture the scene of someone sleeping when suddenly a friend rushes in and with a very loud voice begins to pronounce a blessing. I am sure it would be safe to say that the person receiving the blessing would not count it a blessing.

Sometimes we may be so committed to sharing a message that we run ahead of the Holy Spirit. We talk when we should listen. Morning, noon, or night, we need to be sensitive to the leadership of the Lord. He knows when the timing is right!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“SO!”
Luke 12:11-12
Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.

I am always interested in the current vernacular of the day. A few years ago it was very common to hear people continually use the word “like” many times in a single conversation, sometimes in a single sentence.

The recent buzzword seems to be “so.” I listen to people responding and prefacing  their statements by saying; “so.” I have tried to wrap my mind around the reason. The best explanation I can come up with is that it gives the mind a chance to think before speaking.

A judge I used to work for used colorful expressions. One of his favorite expressions was to make the comment; “You can keep your mouth shut and look stupid, or you can open your mouth and remove all doubt!” It was cynical but oh how accurate it is in many cases.

Spiritually we never want to speak without having the Lord directed us. In those milliseconds before we speak it is well to ask for divine guidance. My desire is to live according to Psalm 19:14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
