“WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER!”
Revelation 21:17
“But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

In 1893, James Black was a Methodist Sunday school teacher in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As he was calling roll one day for a youth meeting, young Bessie, daughter of a drunkard, did not show up, and he was disappointed at her failure to appear. He commented to a friend, “Well, I trust when the roll is called up yonder, she’ll be there.” He tried to find an appropriate song for the situation but could not find one in his song book.

Here is how Mr. Black describes how he came to write the hymn: This lack of a fitting song caused me both sorrow and disappointment. An inner voice seemed to say, ‘Why don’t you write one?’ I put away the thought. As I opened the gate on my way home, the same thought came again so strongly that tears filled my eyes. I entered the house and sat down at the piano. The words came to me effortlessly…The tune came the same way—I dared not change a single note or word.”

“When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder”
(1) When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Refrain: When the roll, is called up yon-der, When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there.
(2) On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share;
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Refrain: When the roll, is called up yon-der, When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there.
(3) Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
Refrain: When the roll, is called up yon-der, When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there.

“GOD IS IN CONTROL!”
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Through the years I have often found my thoughts going back to today’s verse. It was one of the first verses I ever memorized. Come to think about it, it may very well be the reason that I am known as more optimistic than pessimistic. It is not me, but the Lord that makes the difference.

God gives us a tremendous promise in this verse. He promises to strengthen us, to help us and to upholdus. Do you realize what that promise should mean to each of us in our daily walk? It means that we can claim victory over every situation.

As I read this verse again, I see that our requirement is very minimal. We are not called upon to do great and mighty works. We do not even have to possess super human abilities.

So what is our part?  “Fear not” and “Be not dismayed”. The reason the Lord gives us for not fearing or being dismayed is that He is with us and He is our God. With God in control we are free to praise Him and give Him the glory.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

“HANG IN THERE!”
Hebrews 10:35-36
“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
I recall seeing a poster of a kitten barely hanging onto a rope with its two front paws. Under the picture was a caption that said … HANG ON! I think we all have moments in our life when we feel we are barely hanging on.
The writer of Hebrews encourages us to hang onto our confidence and not throw it away. He goes on to assure us that our perseverance will not simply be rewarded, but it will be RICHLY rewarded.
At times we place our confidence in our own strength or possibly we rely on others. While it is good to have others come along side of us and to do the best we can in our life, there is a far more vital thing we must do … we must accomplish the will of God!
How much time do you spend seeking to know and doing the will of God for your life? Discovering God’s will for us is found as we spend time with Him in the study of His word and communing with Him in prayer.
Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

“A MATTER OF FAITH!”
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

It seems I have always been intensely interested in the field of criminal justice. A review of my resume’ says I have been employed as a city police officer, a dispatcher, a juvenile probation officer, a criminal justice planner, and a college professor of criminal justice classes.

One of the things I have learned well through this extensive involvement is that evidence is something that is tangible and able to be presented in court as proof. Without it, the case rests only on circumstantial (or inferred) evidence.

So here is the paradox in Hebrews 11:1-- substances have solid qualities, but faith is ethereal. Evidence is something touchable that is marked for exhibit and a number is placed on it for identification, and yet here in Hebrews it is described as being not seen.

What this verse reveals to me is that we are to have faith that is solid. It is not the namby-pamby type of stuff that cowers in the corner and hopes for the best. It is the bold and positive assurance that God’s Word is true and worthy of our trust.

“A MATTER OF THE WILL!”
Matthew 12:50
For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

Recently I observed a battle being waged between a mother and her daughter who was about two years old. I think they call them the terrible twos!  The stand-off occurred in a public square. The little girl stubbornly sat down and refused to walk with her mother.

The frustrated mother walked about fifteen feet away from her daughter and waited for her to come. The girl threw a fit, but she would only walk one or two steps before sitting down once more.

It was more than five or ten minutes before the little one finally gave in and came to her mother. By that time she was bawling her eyes out and both she and her mother were miserable.

As I have relived that scene, I could see the face of God watching us as we fought for our own will instead of yielding to His will. Just as that little girl could not care for herself, so we are not able to adequately know what lies ahead for us. By yielding our will to His will, we allow the Lord to care for us.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

“WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN!
I Thessalonians 4:17-18
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Though an invalid for much of her life, Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was always active and enjoyed a long personal friendship with Fanny Crosby. These two women met often for fellowship and discussion of their new hymns. Eliza was a school teacher in Philadelphia and a Christian lay worker who was committed to write songs to teach children the basic truths of the gospel. This song was written for her own Sundayschool class in Philadelphia.
Miss Hewitt often attended the Methodist camp meetings at Ocean Grove, New Jersey. It was here that she collaborated with Emily Wilson, the wife of a Methodist district superintendent in Philadelphia, in the writing of this triumphant gospel hymn--a favorite of young and old alike. "When We All Get to Heaven" was first published in 1898.

WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN
1.  Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace.
In the mansions bright and blessed He’ll prepare for us a place.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

2.  While we walk the pilgrim pathway, Clouds will overspread the sky;
But when traveling days are over, Not a shadow, not a sigh.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

3.  Let us then be true and faithful, Trusting, serving every day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory will the toils of life repay.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

4.  Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we’ll behold;
Soon the pearly gates will open; We shall tread the streets of gold.
Refrain: When we all get to Heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

“DYING FOR LOVE!”
Ephesians 5:25-26
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word.”
In my years as a Christian counselor I meet many husbands that are self-centered to the extreme. The usual attitude toward their wife seems to be “What are you doing for me?” or “Don’t expect me to do things around here, that’s a wife’s job!”
I despair when a husband digs his heels in and refuses to assume the role of a husband as presented in the Word of God. They are more influenced by what other men have to say than what God has to say.
So what does God say about the role of a husband? Just read today’s Scripture and you will clearly see a precise job description. To sum it up, he is to love his wife as Jesus loved the church and died for her. Here is a quick question, Husband: Are you dying for your wife? Do you love her as much as you love your own body?
Think about the church of Jesus the Christ for a moment. Is the church perfect? No! Is the church always loveable? No! Does the church always deserve to be sacrificed for? No! Does the church need the Christ’s sacrifice to purify her? Yes!
Listen, Husbands! Jesus’s life is your guideline. He is your example -- not what you want or how you feel, but what He has done for us.

“GRACE!
Philippians 3:12
Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me."

In the second chapter of Joshua we read that the two Israelite spies were saved by the action of  a prostitute named Rahab.  She not only saved their lives, but gave them valuable inside information.  She said that she knew that God had given them the land because the whole land was in fear of the Israelites.  She asked that when they conquered the land that she and her family might be spared.

Rahab followed their orders and the Israelites kept their promise to her.  In the sixth chapter  we read that Joshua sent the same two spies to rescue Rahab and her family. But the story does not end there, my friends.  She was saved, but God had not forgotten her faith. In Hebrews 11:31 she is mentioned along with the faithful of the ages.  In James 2:25-26, she is mentioned as one who was considered righteous for what she did. Even more amazing, the first chapter of Matthew lists Rahab in the genealogy of Jesus.

Now, that brings us to the practical aspects of the forgiveness of sins in our lives.  When we confess our sins, we can begin to live as new creatures.  It is certainly not God who brings your sins of the past to your mind and causes you turmoil.  If it is not the Lord, it is coming from the other side, and that means Satan. It is only by God’s GRACE that we are saved!

“CITIZENSHIP!”
Philippians 3:20
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
My residence is in Tumwater, Washington. My zip code, however, is Olympia, Washington. There are instances where a person’s place of residence is in an area that shows a different location than where they actually reside.
There are certain localities where a person’s residence is nearer a town or city in another nation. One road, river, or railroad can make a distinction as to how an address is determined.
When I was stationed in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada, I had a mail box with a Canadian address. Mail sent to that address came to me, but I was not a Canadian citizen. I was only a temporary resident.
As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ we are citizens of heaven. We may have a temporary address here in this world, but our forever home is celestial and eternal. I frequently find myself homesick for a place I have never been, but I will reside there forever and ever. That is my real citizenship!

“PROPER PRAYER!
Matthew 26:39
“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’

Communication with God is something that many of us desire to cultivate. I fear that in my own prayer life I tend to have a list of answers I want the Lord to respond to. If I fail to see those requests answered the way I want I begin to wonder if I have prayed in error.

I recently read an eye-opening view of prayer by John Stott: “Prayer is not a convenient device for imposing our will upon God, or bending His will to ours, but the prescribed way of subordinating our will to His.”

When I read that statement by John Stott, I immediately thought of the prayer Jesus prayed in the garden just before His arrest and crucifixion. Our Savior was committed to the Father’s will above His own.

If Jesus subordinated His own desires to the Father, how much more must you and I submit our own requests to the Lord? We all too often pray for our pain to be eased and our needs met instead of seeking to find how God can use what we are going through for His purpose and glory. I want to learn to pray for His will above my own.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!
