ALWAYS THANK GOD!

Psalm 30:4 – Devotional

Psalm 30:4

“Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.”

Years ago I heard an illustration about a little boy who had climbed on the roof of his house to retrieve his ball. It was one of the cedar shingle roofs that had been weathered for many years. As he reached for his ball, he suddenly began to slowly slide down the steep pitched roof. He knew that there was nothing to stop him, and without Divine intervention, he was in for a very bad fall.

He began to pray as loud as he could for the Lord to save him. Just before reaching the edge of the roof, a rusty old shingle nail was sticking up and snagged the seat of his pants. He looked toward heaven and shouted out, “Forget it Lord, this nail has saved me!”

Are you are able to visualize those times when God touched us in a special way, but we failed to give Him the thanks and praise He so rightly deserved? We need to start paying on what we owe in the way of exaltation and rejoicing.

In our hectic world we all too often are caught up with our own concerns that we fail to thank God for all He does for us. Without Him all we do and all we hope to do amounts to nothing. It is only what is done for Christ that matters!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing!

HIS SACRED HEAD!

Matthew 27:28-29 – Devotional

Matthew 27:28-29

“They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt in front of Him and mocked Him. ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ they said.”

I can still remember the pomp and pageantry that surrounded the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II back in 1953. When the crown was placed on her head she wore the symbol of authority.

There was a day some 2,000 years ago when arrogant soldiers placed a cruel crown of thorns on the head of our Lord. There will come a day when a crown will be placed on the head of our precious Savior, Jesus Christ and every knee will bow before Him. Those who scorn Him and mock him here on earth will be on their knees. For them it will be too late. For the true believers it will be the greatest celebration of all time.

Sin has covered us with layer upon layer of filth and grime. It does not matter what we do to get rid of it, it still remains. It is only by the blood that flows from Calvary’s Fountain that we can be cleansed and refreshed.

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

O sacred Head, now wounded,
with grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded with thorns,
Thine only crown;
O sacred head, what glory,
what bliss till now was thine!
Yet, though despised and gory,
I joy to call thee mine.

What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered,
was all for sinners’ gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression,
but Thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior!
‘Tis I deserve Thy place;
Look on me with Thy favor,
vouchsafe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow
to thank Thee, dearest friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
O make me Thine forever,
and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
outlive my love to Thee.

OUR DAY IS COMING!

Job 19:25 – Devotional

Job 19:25

“I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.”

Have you ever experienced separation from your home and family? Having spent a year’s tour of duty separated from my family, I know the pain of separation for an extended period. Special days such as birthdays or holidays were the hardest. There were many wonderful experiences during that year, but I always knew that I was there temporarily and it was not home. I was homesick for my family and home. I longed to return to my wife and three precious children.

I once went to a hospital in Bend, Oregon, to visit a member of our church who was a returned missionary. The medical reports indicated that she was in very serious condition and may not be long for this world. I intended to read a few passages of Scripture to her in order to cheer her up.

When I entered her hospital room, it was like an entryway into heaven. This precious saint was so excited about being with her Lord in a few short days that she could hardly contain herself. In the time I spent at her bedside she showered me with praise and hope. I had gone to lift her spirits, but I walked out of that hospital with such a feeling of joy that I almost wished it was me standing on the doorstep of eternity.

I want to encourage all of us to take time and think about being ushered into the presence of our loved ones who have gone on before us and hearing them tell about our new home that will last eternally. Our day is coming – – – soon!

EQUIPPED!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – Devotional

2 Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Recently I conducted a graveside service for a retired police officer. As I looked around the crowd of people in attendance I noticed that many of the police officers were dressed in full uniform with perhaps 20 to 30 pounds of high tech gear. I almost laughed out loud when I recalled what my own police gear looked like when I was a patrolman back in 1958 — a gun, extra ammo, handcuffs, and a badge.

That last item was most important. When I was sworn in as a police officer I gave my word to serve and protect the people of my community under the authority of that badge. The vast majority of citizens supported that authority.

God has equipped us with our very own badge of authority. It is the Word of God. Paul wanted his son in the faith, Timothy, to recognize the power he had been given by the Word of God: doctrine – reproof – correction – instruction in righteousness.

Every believer has the same equipment available today. We are equipped, but are we using what God has provided? Our badge of authority is the new birth and the equipment is His Word. Use it wisely and effectively!

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

AWAKE EARLY!

Psalm 57:8 – Devotional

Psalm 57:8

“Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.”

Our family has made numerous road trips over the years. I think I developed the habit of starting very early in the morning from my dad. When I say “early in the morning,” I mean well before dawn. It just seems that the lack of traffic that early allows you to make much better time. It is almost like reducing the travel time.

I can recall on those trips watching the first hint that dawn was near. The eastern skyline gradually appeared out of the darkness and minute by minute it became more pronounced. Before long gorgeous colors began to emerge and you knew that dawn had arrived.

As we make our way through this sin-darkened world, it often seems as if we are being swallowed up in the inky blackness of depravity. It is during these times that we need to focus our attention on God’s eastern sky…dawn is about to break!

Keep your spirits up, dear hearts! In Psalm 30:5 we are reminded: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Never lose heart as you travel through these dark hours — dawn is always near.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

GOD IS ENOUGH!

2 Corinthians 12:10 – Devotional

2 Corinthians 12:10

“I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

What answer did Paul receive when he prayed for his thorn in the flesh to be removed? GOD IS ENOUGH! Three times Paul prayed for God to remove the thorn and three times the answer was that God’s grace was sufficient.

We all need to learn the same lesson. The sufficiency of God is all we need to bring meaning and purpose to our life. There was a time in my life when I felt that I needed to have my own way. If only I had that request answered by the Lord then everything would be at peace and perfect. It did not happen!

Have you ever experienced that in your life? Are you facing an issue or issues in your life at this very moment in which you feel that if only this or that would happen then you would be at peace and find contentment?

The Lord is the One who is in control and we need to learn the lesson that Paul discovered. In the midst of our weakness and inadequacy God steps in and begins to reveal His power displayed in and through us. I pray that you will allow your personal thorn in the flesh to become the power of God revealed!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
