FOLLOW THE WORD!

Proverbs 16:20 – Devotional

Proverbs 16:20

“He who follows the word wisely will find good.

I have known many people who lived as if the world revolved around them. They seemed to be more concerned about their image than things that really mattered. There was a man in our town who proudly drove his out-dated luxury car around like he was a wealthy tycoon. Instead of waving at friends, he would simply nod.

My mother worked at the college dining hall and would often bring home leftover food that had not been served. She discovered that this family was not able to afford food, so she began making it a practice of providing them with some of the food she brought home.

Pride is an ugly thing! It prevents the one who is proud to realize his need of the Lord. When God is in control of our life, He will provide. As a young married couple we often ate beans and rice until the next payday. Someone brought us several pounds of calf’s liver and to us it tasted like the finest steak. Even now liver and onions brings back memories of how God had provided for us.

When we heed the word of God wisely we can rest content that He will make a way that will be a blessing to us and bring glory to His name. All we need to do is heed his word and we will succeed!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

THIRST FOR GOD!

Psalm 63:1 – Devotional

Psalm 63:1

“O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.

A friend once shared with me a conversation he had with his sweetheart who was many miles away. He asked her if she was spending time reading the Bible and talking with the Lord. She confessed that she wasn’t. He counseled her to make time in the word and prayer her priorities.

My wife Joyce and I were like hand in glove since we were fourteen. We had 66 wonderful years together before she slipped beyond the pain and agony of this life into that wonderful place the Lord has prepared for us. I miss her so bad it hurts.

It is always well for us to cry out in longing to the Lord when we experience the desert times of our life. It is important to realize that the Lord is more anxious to come near to us than we are to come near to Him. The parable that Jesus told of the prodigal son reveals that our heavenly Father is always waiting to welcome us back when we make our way back home.

Do you miss Him? If there is a lack of thirst for the presence of the living God in your life, spend time reading and meditating on His Word. Tell Him where you are and how much you miss Him. Thirst for God! He is waiting to welcome you home!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

REMEMBER TO ENCOURAGE!

Hebrews 3:13 – Devotional

Hebrews 3:13

“Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

I recall Professor Howard Hendricks commenting about how easy it is to dampen the fervor of a new Christian. All too often a more mature believer may react to their joy as they share a spiritual truth he or she has just discovered and blow it off as if a three year old could find such a thing.

Professor Hendricks always made a point of being so thrilled over the new believer’s discovery that he would overflow with excitement and encouragement. This sort of encouragement causes the new believer to want to spend even more time searching the Word.

Each of us has the choice to either encourage or discourage people. Sadly there is a third option. It is to simply ignore people. I have heard it said that being ignored is almost worse than being demeaned. It is like that person does not exist.

How do you rate in the encouragement department? Do others feel motivated to draw closer to the Lord after they have spent time with you? Do not let Satan have the victory because of your indifference. Be an encourager!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
