“GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN!”
Psalm 96:2
Sing to the Lord, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.

Many times when we sing hymns or Carols we fail to comprehend the turmoil that surrounded the writing of these songs. We enjoy them and appreciate the words, but often lack information about their beginnings.

African slaves were known to have sung this week’s hymn as far back as 1865. If you are wondering, that was the year the Civil War ended. Perhaps it was from the joy of freedom that the joy of praise erupted in“Go Tell It On the Mountain.”

It was in 1907 that a professional musician and college professor, John W. Works III arranged the song. He also included it in a songbook he created to promote and preserve African-American music.

“GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN!”
While shepherds kept their watching
Over silent flocks by night
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.
Refrain: Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
The shepherds feared and trembled,
When lo! above the earth,
Rang out the angels chorus
That hailed the Savior’s birth.
Refrain: Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessèd Christmas morn.
Refrain: Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
