“SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER!”

Philippians 4:4-7

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

William Walford did not allow the fact that he was blind limit his service for his Lord. He was frequently called upon to preach in a small country church. He composed the sermons in his head and also was able to quote large portions of Scripture from memory. Some people thought he had memorized the entire Bible. He also composed verses as the Lord laid the words upon his heart. Above all---he was a man of prayer.

In the mid 1800(s), Thomas Salmon was visiting in England and became acquainted with Pastor Walford. As they were visiting one day the blind pastor quoted a few pieces he had composed. Since he had no one to write them down he had kept them treasured in the storehouse of his mind.

One of the verses he related to Mr. Salmon was, Sweet Hour of Prayer. Mr. Salmon eagerly scribbled the words down on a scrap of paper. When he returned to New York he sent the verses to the Observer and asked if they thought them worth preserving. The Observer did think them worthy and published them on September 13, 1845. The music was added by William Bradbury in 1861.

 Sweet Hour of Prayer

Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer! That calls me from a world of care, And bids me at my Father's throne, make all my wants and wishes known. In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief; and oft escaped the tempter's snare by thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer! The joys I feel, the bliss I share, of those whose anxious spirits burn, with strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place, where God my Savior shows His face, and gladly take my station there, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer! Thy wings shall my petition bear to Him whose truth and faithfulness, engage the waiting soul to bless. And since He bids me seek His face, believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer! May I thy consolation share, till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty height, I view my home and take my flight: This robe of flesh I'll drop and rise, to seize the everlasting prize; and shout, while passing through the air, Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!

“A CHUNK OF WOOD!”

Luke 24:31-32

“Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.  And they said to one another, ‘Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’”

It is that time of year when I rely on my trusty little wood stove to supply heat to the house. It has a glass front so I am able to observe the combustion process. From time to time I put in a large chunk of wood and almost always marvel at how resistant it is to burn.

I have learned that you never put in the large chunks of wood when first starting a fire. It requires a hot bed of coals in order to begin the process of combustion. After lying on the bed of hot glowing coals for a little while, things began to happen. Slowly flames begin to flare up alongside the log and before long it too begins to glow.

Not only does the log glow, it soon becomes hot coals that serve to ignite other chunks of wood that I place in the fire. This process repeats itself over and over as the day progresses. The entire house is warmed!

In the spiritual realm we must be aware that as we come in contact with burning coals of spirituality, we stop being a chunk of earthly wood. As we spend time next to spiritual coals, we will begin to glow and provide coals to ignite others!

“EVE OF EVE!”

James 4:14

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

You might notice that I am using the same Scripture reference that I used yesterday. This is the Eve of New Years Eve. The day before a special holiday is often as packed with meaning as the day itself.

The eve of an event holds the anticipation that something special is going to happen. In many cases it even precedes the big day by many days…even a week ahead of the actual day. Getting prepared is part of celebration.

I don’t know about you, but I am on tip toes with anticipation, waiting for that grand and glorious day of the Lord’s return. Just to be able to see Jesus face to face will be the greatest glory I can imagine. Then to have that great reunion with all of my loved ones who have gone on before.

I never want to become indifferent concerning the Lord’s return. Many things will be missing: There will be no more pain. There will be no more sorrow. There will be no more separation. Well, you get the point. All the negatives will be missing and just the positives multiplied thousands of times! THE EVE OF THE EVE OF ETERNITY!

“END OF LIFE CARE!!”

James 4:14

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

I survived Christmas Day with only a few pangs. I kept thinking of how much my dear wife would have loved being with our family on this very special day. Christmas was always a special celebration for us. In sixty-six years we spent every Christmas together except one in 1966 when I was on a remote assignment in St. Anthony, Newfoundland.

While there I was broken up by one song lyric that went “I’ll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams.”  This year was my first Christmas without Joyce, but her first Christmas with Jesus. SHE HAD A BETTER TIME THAN I DID!

It was a year ago that Joyce was in a hospital bed in our living room. She had just been placed on Hospice Care. With her dementia I was not sure if she understood about her condition. I sat by her bed and held her hand and asked if she understood that Hospice was END OF LIFE CARE? She nodded. Little did we know that she would only live three more weeks.

But I was wrong! It was not end of life … it was her entry into everlasting life. No more confusion or pain for my sweetheart. She received the reward of eternal life -- not end of life! IT IS LIFE BEYOND OUR IMAGINATION. I can hardly wait!

“DISPATCHER!”

Matthew 8:9

“For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

Back in the 50’s when I worked for the Nampa, Idaho Police Department, there was no such thing as an emergency call center. You had to dial a number for the fire, police, ambulance, or just dial 0 and the operator would connect you with the service appropriate for the call (fights, drunkenness, domestic disturbances, etc. etc, etc!)

For the most part I was the dispatcher on the graveyard shift (11 pm to 7 am). Any calls that I received I would respond by dispatching one of our patrol officers. Through my own frequent work as a patrol officer I knew what information they needed to receive from the dispatcher.

At certain times of the year we experienced some confusion on the graveyard shift when we would get “skips” in the atmosphere. Radio communications from the Lakeland, Florida Police Department sounded as clear and strong as our calls. Not only that, their cars had the same call signs. If you received a call to remove an alligator from someone’s back yard, you knew it was not from Nampa, Idaho!

The Holy Spirit is our “Dispatcher!” We need to keep our spiritual ears tuned in so we will be able to hear where we are needed. This requires having our spiritual antenna tuned in to station BIBLE! When He calls we need to respond immediately!

“THE FIRST NOEL!”

 Luke 2:11-14

“‘Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.’”     

Most of us have grown up singing the carols of Christmas. One of the most loved of all the carols is The First Noel. While the origin of the melody we sing today is uncertain, the lyrics date back to the 17^thcentury. It is thought to originate in France as far back as the fifteenth century.  We do know that the word Noel is a French word originating from Latin meaning "birthday."

Think what it must have been like for those shepherds who were guarding their sheep on a quiet night when suddenly their lives were changed forever. Of all of the people on the earth that could have received the announcement of the birth of the Jesus, it was to them! They reacted with awe, went to see the Baby, and then spread the wonderful word of His birth.

THE FIRST NOEL

The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay tending their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Refrain: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

They lookèd up and saw a star
Shining in the east, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS!”

I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas. Stop for a moment and think of the ordeal that Joseph and Mary endured to travel some 70 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem. It would have been a difficult journey under any circumstance, but with Mary almost nine months pregnant, it is hard to comprehend.

The stress and turmoil that this earthly couple endured was nothing compared to our Savior leaving the realms of Heaven to be born in the most humble setting. He did it for you and me! He was born in that most humble manner in order to let us know that we can relate to Him! From the cradle to the cross, He shared His love for a world that was lost without a Savior.

As we pause to reflect upon the birth of Jesus, may we open our hearts to give birth to His message of hope to a lost and dying world. Jesus brought light and joy to that dirty and dismal stable. Let Him bring light and joy into your heart. 

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God and be a blessing to others!

“CHOOSE JOY!”

Habakkuk 3:18

“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

I recently received the following email from dear friend who has given me permission to share it with you. It says it all!

Your evotional once again is right on target.  Yesterday, I had a co-worker tell me that just because it is Christmas that is no reason for me to be so cheery!  She went on to tell me that there really is no reason to celebrate because there are a lot of unhappy people in the world.  I took that to mean that she is one of the unhappy.  She lives by herself and maybe she is feeling alone and sad??  Today when she gets to work she will find a lovely flower arrangement waiting for her on her desk.  It comes with a prayer that she may find the reason for celebrating this year.

I remember when I was newly divorced and had to remain home on Christmas Eve by myself waiting for my daughter to be returned to me late that night by her father.  My family was together celebrating and I was sitting there alone.  For a few minutes I began to feel sorry for myself, but then I thought this is silly.  Just because I am alone does not mean I can’t celebrate.  I fixed myself a nice cup of hot chocolate and turned the lights down and lit the Christmas tree.   I put a Christmas special on the television.  Being a working, single mom at Christmas means you are a very busy person.  I enjoyed being able to sit in quiet and relax and unwind and pray.  I began to actually look forward to Christmas Eve knowing I would have that time to myself.  I am sure I was a happier mom on Christmas morning because of that. 

I know it is difficult for you without Joyce physically by your side.  My best friend will be spending her first Christmas without her husband of 35 years by her side.  I will be praying for you.  I think my co-worker brought that to my attention yesterday so that I would be reminded to pray for those missing their loved ones and those that really need to be saved.

The most important thing I can do this Christmas season is to make time to be alone to pray.

“THE GREATEST GIFT!”

Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Back in the dark ages when I was attending college, I supported my family by working as a police officer. I worked 48 hours a week and my salary, as I recall, was $120 per month. When I received my paycheck it was not a gift -- I had earned it!

There is a vast difference between wages and gifts. Wages are paid for performing a service as required. Gifts are not given on the basis of performance, but rather as an expression of love. The most precious gifts are those into which a person has poured their heart and soul.

Above my desk hangs an 18” x 12” wall plaque that is one of my most precious gifts. It was given to me by our oldest daughter, Brenda, shortly before her death in 1991. It is a counted cross stitch of Isaiah 40:31: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

In order to enjoy that precious gift, I had to open the package. The joy on Brenda’s face when she watched me open her gift was priceless! It brought her joy just to see how much it pleased me. It brings joy to the Lord when we open His gifts. Please do not leave God’s greatest gift unopened!

“GET EXCITED!”

Luke 2:20

“Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.”

Have you ever been away from city lights on a clear, cool, and crisp night? You suddenly see stars that you never knew existed. The heavens seem to be alive with stars shining forth in varying degrees of brightness. Some of them even seem to be of different colors. If you consistently live and work in this environment for a while, you may lose your sense of awe.

The shepherds must have fallen into that latter category on the night they were watching their sheep. They may have been sharing a bit of cheese and bread during their night vigil of protecting their sheep. But suddenly things changed!

The heavens seemed to split wide open as an angel of the Lord appeared and delivered the most wonderful message that could ever be heard -- "MESSIAH HAD COME!!" After the announcement, the heavens split open with a huge angelic contingent praising God and giving glory! Immediately the shepherds left their sheep to seek the Shepherd of mankind.

These simple shepherds became the first evangelists proclaiming that they had seen the prophesied Messiah! I can almost share their excitement as they happily told friends and family about what they had seen and heard. It reminds me that when we see Jesus for ourselves, we need to get excited and share the news!

“SILENT NIGHT!”
Luke 2:2-10

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’”

Several years ago our church had finished a wonderful Christmas Eve service. Earlier there had been candles placed inside white lunch bags that lined the driveway leading to the church.

Joyce and I had volunteered to extinguish the candles after everyone had left. It had snowed a few days earlier and there were still a few inches on the ground. The temperature was below freezing when we crunched through the snow to the far end of the driveway. It was so quiet and beautiful that we were moved in our spirit with the beauty of God’s creation and the carol Silent Night.

The words of this well loved carol were written in 1818 by Josef Mohr after he had seen a play about the birth of Jesus. He was in a reflective mood and walked to a hill overlooking his village in the Austrian Alps. The view of the snow covered village reminded him of a poem he had written a few years earlier. The poem was about the night the angel announced the birth of Jesus.

The next day he took the words of his poem to Franz Gruber, who had just composed a melody. He re-worked the melody to match the words to the poem Mohr written. Our beloved carol, “Silent Night was born.
